Gingerbread Cake With Lemon Sauce

Another recipe from Irish Cooking for St Patricks Day. Could you guess I love gingerbread?
Ingredients:
cake
1/2 stick butter
1/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed (i like dark brown)
1/4 cup white sugar
1 lightly beaten egg
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup light molasses or thick golden syrup
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp grated nutmeg
1/4 tsp salt
lemon sauce
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 stick butter
3 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp vanilla
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
2. Spray an 8 inch square or 9 inch round cake pan with cooking spray.
3. Cream together butter, brown sugar and white sugar until fluffy.
4. Beat in egg, buttermilk and molasses until well blended.
5. Combine flour, spices, soda and salt and add to creamed mixture and beat well.
6. Pour into prepared pan.
7. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
8. Cool 15 minutes in the pan then turn out of pan.
9. For sauce, combine all ingredients in a small heavy saucepan.
10. Bring to a boil over medium high heat while stirring constantly.
11. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes or until the sauce thickens a little bit.
12. Garnish as desired. Grated lemon peel is pretty if you used the juice of a fresh lemon.
