I found this in our local Kalamazoo Women's Life Style magazine. They looked wonderful! I only bake three different kinds of cookies each year, (The kids have the attention span of a goldfish!) so, I'm making, My gingerbread children, sortbread and these! Read more !!! Serving size is aproximate dozens.
Ingredients:
2/3 cup vegtable shortening
1/3 cup butter softened
1 cup maple syrup at room temperature
1 tbs molasses
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
4 cups whole-wheat flour
2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ginger
1/4 tsp ground clove
1/4 tsp nutmeg
Directions:
1. Cream together shortening and butter in a large bowl. Gradually beat in maple syrup, molasses and vanilla. Mix flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cloves and nutmeg and work them into creamed mixture about 1 cup at a time.
2. Using floured hands, divide dough in half and wrap each half in plastic; flatten each into a disk. Chill at least 2 hours.
3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and lightly grease baking sheet or line with ungreased parchment paper. Roll dough out, one half at a time, onto sheet of waxed paper, to a little less than 1/4 inch thick. Cut inot desired shapes, transfe to baking sheet and bake 8 to 10 minutes, until bottoms are golden.
4. Cool briefly on sheet, transfer to wire rack to finish cooling.
5. Decorate as desired.
