Gahboo's Bread and Butter Pickles

A traditional bread and butter pickle recipe. More on the sweet, and un-spicy or un-tangy side. More sweet than tart.
Ingredients:
4 quarts cucumbers, sliced
6 cups onions, sliced
1 green bell pepper, sliced
1 red sweet bell pepper, sliced
3 garlic cloves, whole
1/3 cup pickling salt
5 cups sugar
3 cups cider vinegar
1 tablespoon yellow mustard seeds
1 tablespoon brown mustard seeds
1 1/2 teaspoons celery seeds
1 1/2 teaspoons ground turmeric
Directions:
1. Combine cucumbers, onion, green pepper, red pepper, and garlic.
2. Layer mixture, salt and cracked ice in a large bowl.
3. Let stand covered 3 hours, then drain in collander, but do not rinse.
4. Remove garlic cloves, and combine all remaining ingredients in large stock pot.
5. Bring to boiling, then remove from heat.
6. Fill hot pint jars leaving 1/2 headspace, remove bubbles.
7. Adjust lids and process in boiling water bath for 5 minutes (begin timing after boil returns).
8. Remove and cool.
