Fudge Ripple Layer Cake

From Southern Living. Moist fudgy cake with a cheesecake center. All diets are off with this one!
Ingredients:
cake
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 large eggs
1 2/3 cup all purpose flour
2/3 cup cocoa
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla
filling
1 8oz package cream cheese-softened
2 tablespoons butter-softened
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
frosting
2/3 cup butter-softened
5 3/4 cups sifted powedered sugar
1 1/3 cups cocoa
3/4 cup milk
1 teaspooon vanilla
3/4 chopped walnuts or pecans-optional
Directions:
1. Cake:
2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
3. Grease and flour two 9 round cake pans. Set aside.
4. Beat shortening at medium speed until fluffy. Gradually add sugar,beating well.
5. Add eggs,1 at a time,beating well after each addition.
6. Combine flour,cocoa,baking soda,and salt. Add to shortening mixture alternatively with buttermilk,beginning and ending with flour.
7. Turn mixer to low after each addition for even blending.
8. Stir in vanilla. Pour batter into prepared pans. Set aside.
9. Filling:
10. Beat cream cheese,butter,and cornstarch together until creamy.
11. Gradually add sweetened condensed milk,beating well.
12. Add egg. Beat well.
13. Stir in vanilla. Spoon mixture evenly over batter in both pans. DO NOT STIR.
14. Bake for 40 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean.
15. Cool layers in pans for 10 minutes then turn out onto wire racks.
16. Cool completely.
17. Frosting:
18. Beat butter at medium speed until creamy.
19. Combine powdered sugar and cocoa and add to butter alternatively with milk beginning and ending with sugar.
20. Beat until mixture reaches spreading consistency.
21. Stir in vanilla. Frost layers.
22. Sprinkle with nuts of desired.
