Fudge Frosting/ Hot Fudge Sauce

Originally the recipe was used as frosting for my grandma's chocolate mayonnaise cake, but also works well as a hot fudge sauce for ice cream. It's not overpowering in sweetness or flavor and I love the smooth texture. You decide or do what I did and try both. Cooking, prep, and yield is approximate.
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups sugar
4 tablespoons cocoa
5 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups water
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons butter
Directions:
1. Stir first five ingredients over medium low heat until thick, when it just starts to bubble.
2. Remove from heat.
3. Stir in vanilla and butter.
4. If using as frosting let cool.
