This is another really old recipe from Better Homes and Gardens. Make sure you frost with my Browned Butter Frosting.
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup shortening
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
8 ounces sour cream
2/3 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
2. Grease cookie sheets, set aside.
3. In a large mixing bowl beat the brown sugar and shortening with an electric mixer on medium speed until well mixed.
4. Add baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
5. Beat until combine, scraping side of bowl occasionally.
6. Beat in eggs and vanilla until combined.
7. Add flour and sour cream alternately to beaten mixture, beating until combined after each addition.
8. Stir in the 2/3 cup nuts.
9. Drop dough by rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart onto prepared cookie sheets.
10. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.
11. Transfer to wire racks and let cool.
12. Spread cooled cookies with Browned Butter Frosting.
13. If desired, top with additional chopped walnut or walnut halves.
