This is the best French toast recipe I have ever had. It takes a little preparation (mostly just remembering to do it the night before), but it is so worth it. Common sense would tell you that the bread would be a soggy mess in the morning, but if you handle the bread carefully, you will have the best French toast on earth. I grew up with this recipe, and frankly, it has spoiled me to other French toast recipes. It was my fathers recipe.
Ingredients:
8 slices french bread (sliced to 1/2-inch)
1 tablespoon sugar
4 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons orange juice (or to make it extra fancy, grand marnier)
2 tablespoons butter or 2 tablespoons margarine
powdered sugar
Directions:
1. Arrange bread in glass baking dishes in a single layer.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together sugar, eggs, vanilla, milk, salt and OJ.
3. Pour over bread.
4. Gently turn the bread to coat both sides of bread with liquid.
5. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
6. In hot butter in skillet, sauté bread until golden brown, about 4 minutes each side.
7. Sprinkle with confectioners sugar.
