I usually use regular white bread (rather than Texas Toast) and if you can find some day-old bread all the better. A drier bread actually makes for a lighter French toast. I also pour maple syrup between layers for a sweeter end result. Read more . Basically, you can vary the ingredients to suit your tastes.
Ingredients:
4 slices texas toast (1 thick white bread) or one loaf white bread (day-old preferably)
6 large eggs
1 1/2 cups milk
1 cup light cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 cup soft butter or margarine
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon light corn syrup
Directions:
1. Butter a 9 square baking pan. Overlap bread slices to completely fill pan. In a medium bowl, combine eggs, milk, cream, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg, mixing well.
2. Pour over bread slices, then cover and refrigerate overnight. Next day, remove from fridge 3/4 hour before baking and preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
3. In a small bowl, combine butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup, mixing well. Spread this mixture evenly over the bread. (You can also put some of this mixture in between bread layers)
4. Bake 45-60 minutes or until puffed and golden. Serve with warm maple syrup.
