Haanv Goenche ani nustyak haanv saamke maazar! (Konkani) I'm a Goan and when it comes to fish, I'm a Cat! I just freaking love sea-food. And here is one of my favorite recipes - Fish Cutlets. For this I strictly use only Mackerel. Read more . This is a traditional Goan dish, staple to most Christian families. It is served as a side dish or starter. Its yum! Very simple. Even if you are a novice cook, I would encourage you to go for it. Its very easy.
Ingredients:
mackerel - 500 gms
onion, finely chopped - 2, medium sized
tomato, finely cut - 2, medium sized
green chillies, finely cut - 3
fresh coriander, finely cut - a small bunch
red chilli powder - 1 tsp
turmeric powder - 1 tsp
coriander powder - 1 tsp
egg - 1
cooking oil
chiroti rava - should be very fine
salt
Directions:
1. In a vessel, add 1 cup water and the pieces of fish. Add 1/2 spoon Red Chilli powder and Turmeric powder, each. Add a little less than 1/2 tsp of salt.
2. Cover the vessel and boil on low flame until the pieces are cooked. Don't add to much of water or else you'll have to throw the water away, thus losing vital nutrients.
3. Once the fish is ready, separate the flesh from the bones.Throw the bones away.
4. If some water is remaining, keep it. We'll use it later.
5. In another vessel, mix the fish, onion , tomatoes, green chillies, fresh coriander, egg , coriander powder.
6. Add 1/2 tsp turmeric and red chilli powder. Salt as required.
7. Mix it all together nicely, such that the fish is crushed and blends well with the other ingredients.
8. You may add 2-3 tsp of the water that remained after boiling the fish.
9. Make small round balls of the mixture and then flatten them slightly. (Similar to mutton kheema balls)
10. Be careful not to squeeze out the water from the mixture.
11. Put some oil in the pan and heat it on medium flame.
12. Take some rava in a plate. Roll the fish cutlets in the rava and fry them in the oil on both sides, till you get a nice brown crust.
13. If the oil is not enough, you can add some more. But don't make them too oily.
14. Serve as starters or a side dish, as you like.
