This a quick and easy old favorite. Like homemade English muffins that you just slice, toast and slather with butter. If you're from Baltimore you might remember Silber's bakery and the wonderful English muffin bread they made. Read more ...this is exactly like that old favorite.
Ingredients:
2 envelopes dry yeast
6 cups flour
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons salt
2 cups skim milk
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup cornmeal
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 400. Grease 2 loaf pans and sprinkle well with cornmeal.
2. In a large bowl, mix 3 cups flour, yeast, sugar, salt & soda. Heat liquids to very warm and add to dry ingredients. Then beat well. Stir in remaining 3 cups of flour then spoon into prepared loaf pans. Sprinkle tops with cornmeal.
3. Bake at 400 for 25 minutes. Test these for doneness by tapping tops - when they sound hollow they're done. Remove from pans immediately and cool on rack. To serve, slice and toast.
