Eggless Date Apple & Walnut Cake

My DD made this at school in cooking. I didnt even get to taste them. By the time I got home they were all gone !!! My DH & DS gave them the big thumbs up, and have asked her to make them again!!
Ingredients:
60 g butter or 60 g margarine
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1 teaspoon hot water
3/4 cup apple puree
1 cup wholemeal self-rising flour
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
1/4 cup chopped pitted dates
2 teaspoons slivered almonds
Directions:
1. Set oven at 180dg c .
2. Grease and line a 200mm bar tin.
3. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
4. Mix bi-carb and water. Stir bi-carb mixture into all other ingredients (except almonds)and mix well.
5. Place in pan and sprinkle with the slivered almonds.
6. Bake for 45 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean.
7. Cool on rack and cut into bars.
8. Serve warm with whipped cream or cold.
