Easy Bread and Jam Dessert

My family always called this bread pudding, but it's really more like a simple trifle. The number of servings is a guess; everybody always wanted more helpings! Prep time does not include chilling time.
Ingredients:
1 pint whipping cream
1 tablespoon sugar
16 ounces white bread, sliced (1 loaf)
1/4 lb butter (no substitutes)
1 (12 ounce) jar raspberry jam
Directions:
1. Whip the cream with the sugar.
2. Remove crusts from bread.
3. Butter the bread slices on one side only.
4. Lay several slices of bread in a large bowl, butter side up.
5. Spread some of the jam over the buttered bread.
6. Spread some of the whipped cream over the jam.
7. Repeat layering with remaining ingredients. The last layer of bread should be butter side down.
8. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for at least 2 hours.
9. Serve with additional sweetened whipped cream.
