This dirt cake has been around for awhile. It is just a fun recipe. I had family from Austria and as we ate dinner it sat in the middle of the picnic table. Of course it looked like a potted plant that I bought a specific container that was terracotta like but plastic and it happened to have no holes. Read more . It looked like dirt for the last layer and I had a Plant in it that looked so real. So I started spading from the pot he was shocked until he realized, it was just fun. Or make this as a great dessert, so creamy and yummy.
Ingredients:
great for picnics or any parties. you can do this in a 9 x 13 pan with out all the trimmings. its a great desserts.
1/2 large (11/4lb) cream filled chocolate sandwich cookies, crushed and set aside
1/2 stick margarine, softened
8 ounce package cream cheese, softened
1/2 pound, approximately 2 cups, 10 x sugar (confectioners)
3 1/2 cups milk
2 small (3 1/2) packages vanilla instant pudding.
12 ounces frozen whipped topping, thawed
Directions:
1. Cream margarine, cheese and sugar and set aside.
2. In large bowl low speed mix milk & puddings with whipped topping then blend in cheese mix.
3. Layer mix: alternate layers starting with crumbs on bottom then cheese layer, crumb, cheese, ending with crumb to give the appearance of dirt.
4. Add decorations to give appearance of a potted plant. (gummy worms( under the dirt), flowers, spade)
5. 2-6” Flower pots- Plastic or clay if holes line with foil
6. Serve with a spade
7. Of course All new or set aside just for this purpose!
8. Use imagination to decorate:
9. Artificial flowers for top. Or Cactus, use candy pebbles etc…
10. In using the plants before inserting I wrap plastic wrap around the stems.
11. Variation: if you use a cactus theme you may want to use banana pudding and vanilla cookies. Use whatever pudding and cookie combination you like.
12. Suggestions:
13. I used 1 Large Pot to hold all the mix, or 3” pots for individual servings set at each dinner plate.
14. Total yield of the mousse filling and crumb mixture is 11 cups. To determine the volume of your pot size plug the hole fill with water then measure.
