Ingredients:

  • use a medium bowl for the following
  • 2 cups ap flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • place the whites in a large bowl and the yolks in a small bowl
  • the next 4 ingredients are the soak
  • 14 oz 2% milk

Directions:

  1. Procedure:
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  3. Grease two 9-inch cake pans, use either clarified butter or butter pan spray.
  4. Place the flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl and use a whisk to blend well.
  5. Separate the eggs, placing the whites in a large bowl, and the yolks in a small bowl.
  6. Whip the egg whites with a hand mixer on high speed until soft peaks form, then turn mixer speed down to lowest speed and slowly add in the flour mix just until it is incorporated in and no more.
  7. Now add the sugar, milk, vanilla and egg yolks to the egg whites beating one additional minute.
  8. Pour the batter into the cake pan/s and bake for 25 – 30 minutes or until done. Do not over bake or it will not taste right in the end.
  9. Wash the large bowl you used for the batter good and while the cake is in the oven, whip the three milks and the rum together in this bowl using the hand mixer. (make sure to wash the beaters first)
  10. Once the cake is done in the oven, remove it and place it on your countertop on some hot pads. Use a fork or a toothpick and make a ton of holes in the cake quickly, and then pour the entire milk mixture over the cake.
  11. All of the milk mix will soak in. Just let the cake sit until it is totally cool, then cover and place in your fridge overnight.
  12. The next day whip up some homemade whipped cream using about 1 and 1/2 cups of heavy cream and 1/4 cup of fine sugar(not powder sugar and not granulated,, it wont taste right) and 2 TBSP vanilla extract.
  13. Spread the whipped cream over the cake evenly, cut and serve.
  14. Enjoy!!!!
  15. Variation: Chocolate tres leches cake
  16. Add 1/4 cup heavy cream and 1/4 cup dutch cocoa to the batter. Also add 1/4 cocoa to your whipped cream.
