A soft, moist, chewy cake with a distinct nut and date taste. It is a very old recipe that I got from my Mother-In-Law about 1960. One of my husbands favorites!
Ingredients:
1 cup chopped nuts
1 cup pitted and chopped dates
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup water
1 tablespoon butter
1 cup sugar
1 pinch salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 egg
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon butter
Directions:
1. Boil together first 5 ingredients.
2. Add the next 6 ingredients.
3. Mix together and pour into a greased 8 x 8 baking dish.
4. Bake in a 8x8 greased baking dish for 40 minute
5. In the meantime boil for 3 minutes the last 5 ingredients and pour over the warm baked cake and let cool. Serve with ice cream or whipping cream.
