This is my Fathers recipe. He has been making it for as long as I can remember. I'm pretty sure the original recipe came from his grandmother, so I think I can call it a Family Recipe . We drink this liqueur with milk (add milk to taste). This is a large batch, to make less halve the non-alcoholic ingredients and use a fifth of vodka. Dad swears cheap vodka is best in this recipe.
Ingredients:
6 cups sugar
6 cups water
2 ounces instant coffee granules
2 fluid ounces vanilla extract (scant 1/4 cup)
4 cups boiling water
1/2 gallon vodka (crystal palace)
Directions:
1. Heat six cups sugar and six cups water in large pan. Simmer until thick and syrupy. Thirty minuets or so maybe more maybe less. Meanwhile combine four cups boiling water with coffee and vanilla, stir to dissolve. The syrup is the tricky part if cooked too long it will be just fine as long as it is not burnt. Remove syrup from heat and add coffee mixture. If there are any chunks of hardened sugar the syrup has been cooked too long. To remedy this cook and stir over low heat until dissolved. Cool the end result until at least lukewarm before adding vodka. I place the pan in a sink full of ice water to cool faster. Once vodka is added this makes about 1 gallon. To make less halve ingredients and use one fifth (750 ml) of vodka.
