Ingredients:
9 whole graham crackers |
nonedible icing |
decorations: crushed assorted flavors roll candies, silver dragées (see note), miniature chocolate candy bars, sunflower kernels |
additional cardboard |
1 sugar cone ice cream cone |
artificial snow (see note) |
Directions:
1. To Make Church Windows and Doors: Place 4 whole graham crackers on a flat surface. Frost one side of each cracker with icing; smooth with a spatula. Draw lines through icing to resemble siding on a house.
2. Decorate 2 frosted crackers with stained glass windows for the sides of the church. Using icing, pipe outline of each window, and then fill in with icing. Sprinkle crushed assorted roll candies inside each window to resemble stained glass. Press candy gently to adhere. Pipe as desired around windows, and decorate with small silver dragées. Set aside to dry.
3. Decorate 1 frosted graham cracker as the front of the church. Using icing, pipe outline of double doors, and then fill in with icing. Trim miniature chocolate candy bars to fit as doors. Press chocolate doors into icing. Pipe 2 dots of icing onto doors; press 2 large silver dragées into icing. Pipe as desired around doors, and decorate with dragées.
4. To assemble base of church: Start near 1 edge of cardboard (to leave room for a pathway), and squeeze a line of icing 1/4 thick in a 5 square. (Use a pencil to sketch this out first, if needed.) This square will hold the workshop's 4 walls firmly to the cardboard base.
5. Squeeze icing along 1 short edge of 1 cracker with windows. Press cracker against 1 short edge of a plain whole cracker (the back of workshop). Place crackers on a corner of icing on cardboard. Gently hold 2 walls in place 1 minute or until set. Reach into the inside corner seam of 2 walls and reinforce the seam with more icing, using your finger. Repeat procedure to attach the other side and front of workshop, 1 cracker at a time. Reinforce inside corner seams with icing, using finger. Set workshop aside to dry completely (at least 1 hour) before adding roof. Meanwhile, decorate crackers for roof.
6. To Make Roof and Steeple: Cut 1 graham cracker in half lengthwise using a serrated knife and a gentle sawing motion. Place half of cracker next to long side of a whole cracker, measure them together, and cut out cardboard to match size. Glue 1 1/2 crackers to cardboard using icing. Let dry. Repeat procedure to make other side of roof, using remaining cut cracker piece and another whole cracker.
7. Place 2 cardboard-backed roof pieces on a flat surface. Pipe icing as desired to cover cracker side of roof pieces. Decorate with small silver dragées. Set aside to dry.
8. Pipe icing across top of side walls of church and across 1 long edge of 2 roof pieces. Gently position roof pieces in place on top of side walls. Hold 2 roof pieces in place 1 minute. (Roof and walls should line up exactly.)
9. Break off little pieces from wide end of sugar cone to fit cone on roof. Pipe icing onto cone. Decorate with a silver dragée on top. Set aside to dry. Apply icing onto bottom of cone. Gently place cone on roof for steeple. Hold in place 1 minute.
10. Cut remaining 2 graham crackers into wide triangles, using a serrated knife and a gentle sawing motion. Frost 1 side of each large triangle with icing; smooth icing with a spatula. Using a knife, draw lines through icing to resemble siding. On 1 frosted triangle, outline desired shape for a stained glass window using icing. Fill in with icing, and sprinkle with crushed candies. Press candies gently to adhere. Set triangles aside to dry.
11. Pipe icing around all edges of 2 frosted triangles. Attach to front and back of roof. Hold pieces in place 1 minute. Pipe icing to fill in gaps above triangles.
12. To Add Finishing Touches: Pipe icing along roof edges and corners of church; immediately apply silver dragées, if desired, using tweezers. Pipe outline of path with icing and fill in with icing; place sunflower kernels inside path to create walkway. Press to adhere. Apply silver dragées to outline of path, using tweezers. Sprinkle artificial snow around church, covering cardboard completely.
13. Note: We used a box containing 3 sizes of nonedible silver dragées.
14. Note: Find artificial snow at most craft stores.
