Cola Braised Pork Stew

I found this recipe in a Bon Appetit Magazine. The recipe is by, Juli-Tsuchiya-Waldron (Tokyo, Japan)
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon oil
2 lbs country-style boneless pork ribs, excess fat trimmed, cut into 1 1/2 to 2 inch cubes
2 cups cola (do not use diet)
6 garlic cloves, minced
3 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons chopped peeled ginger
1 bunch green onion, chopped
1 1/2 cups sliced mushrooms
cooked brown rice or cooked white rice, to serve stew over
Directions:
1. Heat oil in large pot over high heat.
2. Add half of pork; sauté until brown.
3. Transfer pork to bowl.
4. Repeat with remaining pork.
5. Return pork to pot.
6. Turn off heat and slowly add cola into pot.
7. Bring to a boil.
8. Reduce heat to med-low, cover and simmer 30 minute.
9. Add garlic, soy sauce, ginger, mushrooms and half of the onions.
10. Cook and simmer until pork is tender, about 40 minutes.
11. Uncover and simmer until sauce is slightly thickened.
12. Season with salt and pepper; transfer to bowl.
13. Sprinkle with remaining onions.
14. Serve over rice.
