Chocolate Wafer Pie

Originally from Paula Deen magazine, this recipe was submitted to recipezaar by Lainey6605. The pie may be frozen without the whipped topping and chocolate shavings.
Ingredients:
3 egg whites
1/8 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup chocolate wafer crumbs, finely ground
1/2 cup pecans, chopped
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
8 ounce container frozen non-dairy topping, thawed
grated chocolate (optional)
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F..
2. Coat a 9 pie dish with cooking spray.
3. In medium bowl beat egg whites and salt at high speed until foamy.
4. Gradually add sugar, beating until stiff peaks form.
5. Gently fold in chocolate wafer crumbs, pecans and vanilla.
6. Spoon mixture into prepared pie dish.
7. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes OR until center of pie is firm.
8. Let cool completely on wire rack.
9. Spread whipped topping over pie prior to serving.
10. Garnish with grated chocolate, if desired.
