Chocolate Meringue Bread Pudding

The sweet chocolate layer and pretty golden meringue set this bread pudding apart from the rest. Has a wonderful custard-like consistency.
Ingredients:
8 slices day-old white bread,cubed (about 4 c)
2 c milk
1/2 c plus 2 tbs sugar,divided
3 eggs,seperated
2 tbs butter,melted
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 c (6z) semi-sweet chocolate chips
Directions:
1. Place bread cubes in greased 9 square baking dish. Combine the milk,1/2 c sugar,egg yolks,butter and vanilla;pour over bread. Sprinkle with chocolate chips.
2. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 mins. or till knife inserted near center comes out clean.
3. In small mixing bowl,beat egg whites on med. speed until soft peaks form. Gradually beat in remaining sugar,1 Tbs at a time,on high until stiff peaks form.
4. Spread evenly over hot filling ,sealing meringue to sides of dish. Bake,uncovered,for 10-12 mins more or till meringue is golden. Serve warm. Refrigerate leftovers.
