Chocolate Cake w/ Vanilla Sauce

I was told this is a Shaker recipe from Sabbath Day Lake, Maine. I do know it was a huge hit at a dinner last week. Very moist and rich.
Ingredients:
1 3/4 cups cake flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup cocoa
1 1/2 cups sugar
2/3 cup milk
2 eggs
1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup light cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
Directions:
1. Cake: Heat over to 375 F degrees.
2. Cream the sugar and eggs together.
3. Add milk, butter and vanilla.
4. Sift dry ingredients& add to the dry mixture.
5. Mix thoroughly.
6. Bake in a 9 x 9 or a small bundt cake pan, for 25 minutes.
7. Filling: Melt butter in medium saucepan.
8. Remove from heat.
9. Add remaining ingredients, mixing well.
10. Simmer, stirring over low heat about 5 minutes or until the sugar is dissolved.
11. Serve hot over pudding or cake.
