Cherry Herring (Yummy, Not Healthy)

My mother used to make this and it looked interesting. Make it in the spring when the cherries are ripe and serve it the following winter.
Ingredients:
2 quarts sour cherries, unpitted
2 cups sugar
1 (750 ml) bottle bourbon (100 proof)
Directions:
1. Mix cherries, sugar, and bourbon in a glass 1 gallon jar.
2. Keep in a cool, dark place.
3. Shake once a week.
4. Serve chilled at Christmas time.
