There are other cherry chocolate cookies on here but this one is a little different. I got this recipe from a community cookbook in the 1980s. I don't really like maraschino cherries so I either put a pecan or walnut half on top or I just frost them as is. 2/3 cup butter is 10 and 2/3 tablespoons.
Ingredients:
2/3 cup softened butter
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 2/3 cups flour
6 tablespoons cocoa
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
36 maraschino cherries, halves
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons water
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Cream butter, 3/4 cup sugar, egg, and vanilla in bowl until light and fluffy.
3. Add mixture of flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt; mix well.
4. Shape into 1 inch balls.
5. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
6. Press cherry half into center of each cookie.
7. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes or until almost set.
8. Cool on wire rack.
9. Combine 2 tablespoons sugar and 2 tablespoons water in saucepan.
10. Cook over medium heat until sugar dissolves.
11. Remove from heat and add chocolate chips.
12. Stir until chocolate melts.
13. Frost tops of cookies, leaving cherries unfrosted.
