Cherry Almond Muffins

My mother used to make these muffins all the time when I was growing up. Now they are a frequent muffin request by my family. They are oh so good and quick and easy to boot!
Ingredients:
1 3/4 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter (cold)
1 egg
3/4 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon almond extract (or vanilla)
8 ounces cream cheese (softened)
1 egg
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup flour
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons butter (cold)
1/3 cup almonds (chopped)
3/4 cup cherry preserves
Directions:
1. Muffin Batter:
2. In a bowl combine all the ingredients except the sour cream, egg, and extract. Cut the butter in until it resembles coarse crumbs. Beat the sour cream, egg, and extract until smooth and mix with other ingredients. Set aside.
3. Filling:.
4. In a bowl mix the ingredients together. Set aside.
5. Topping:.
6. In a bowl combine all the ingredients except the preserves and nuts. Cut in the butter until crumbly. Add nuts.
7. Fill muffin cups half way with half of batter.
8. Divide filling between muffins.
9. Divide preserves between muffins.
10. Top with remaining batter.
11. Sprinkle topping on muffins.
12. Bake 350 for 30 - 35 minutes or until done.
