This is what I do when the kids want macaroni and cheese AGAIN but I want something a little more mature. I hope you like it.
Ingredients:
1/4 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon dried basil
1/4 teaspoon cumin
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
8 ounces elbow macaroni
8 ounces broccoli
8 ounces polish sausage
8 ounces american cheese
2 ounces breadcrumbs
4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons flour
4 cups milk
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
2. Lightly grease an 8 x 10 baking pan.
3. Cook the macaroni until al dente then drain.
4. Chop broccoli into bite size pieces.
5. Quarter the Polish sausage length-wise then slice into bite sized pieces.
6. Fry the Polish sausage until brown then drain off the excess grease.
7. Steam the broccoli until it is tender but still firm.
8. In a large sauce pan melt the butter then add the flour and stir continuously to make a light roux.
9. Add milk slowly to the roux, a little at a time, stirring continuously until thickened and creamy.
10. Add in the American cheese a bit at a time while stirring the sauce until all cheese is added and melted into creamy goodness.
11. Mix the chili powder, garlic powder, dried basil, cumin and black pepper to the sauce.
12. Fold the sauce into the cooked macaroni.
13. (If you have picky kids like I do this is where you can portion out their servings into a covered dish and keep it warm.).
14. Gently fold the cooked Polish sausage and broccoli into the macaroni and cheese.
15. Pour the macaroni mixture into the prepared baking dish.
16. Sprinkle the bread crumbs evenly over the top.
17. Bake for 20 minutes until the top turns a golden brown and the casserole is bubbly.
18. Serve and enjoy!
