Cheese and Onion Pie

This is a recipe passed along from my grandmother...not sure where she got it though. It's one of those dishes that you either love or hate. I love it!
Ingredients:
1 double crust pie crust (top and bottom)
onion, sliced (lots)
500 g sharp cheddar cheese, grated
Directions:
1. Layer onion slices, grated cheddar cheese and salt and pepper into prepared pie shell.
2. Continue layering until pie is heaped up. Cover with pastry.
3. Bake.
4. Let cool slightly before slicing. Can be eaten warm or cold.
