This would be a fun project in the kitchen for kids. I think you could substitute regular Cheerios for Honey Nut Cheerios because these bars are pretty sweet. This is a super simple treat you can whip up at the last minute that looks festive and is similar to Rice Krispy Treats. Recipe from Family Dollar Recipe and Coupon Book and General Mills.
Ingredients:
6 cups honey nut cheerios
6 tablespoons butter
4 1/2 cups miniature marshmallows
green food coloring
red cinnamon candies or gumdrop
Directions:
1. Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper.
2. Pour the cereal into a 4-quart bowl and set aside.
3. Place the butter and marshmallows in a 3-quart saucepan. Heat over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is smooth.
4. Remove the saucepan from the heat.
5. Stir in the food color until the mixture is evenly colored.
6. Pour the marshmallow mixture over the cereal and stir until the cereal is evenly coated.
7. Lightly spray your hands with cooking spray.
8. For each tree, shape about 1/4 cup of the cereal mixture into a Christmas tree shape on the cookie sheet.
9. Press the candies into the trees to decorate. If using gumdrops, slice into the size of ornaments.
10. Refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour.
11. Store the trees in a loosely covered container.
