This is a fleeting moment of frivolity to enjoy as you search for an inspiration for supper. Or whatever. I took both the poem and the cartoon from the internet, presuming they're both in the public domain. I think they go together well. Read more . If you like the poem, Google the author. He was a real life 19th century cowboy turned poet. Lots of great stuff by him. I can't take a lot of poetry, but this reminds me of Robert W. Service. Nostalgic, sometimes goofy, with the type of meter, rhyme, and structure that I can fathom. I like limericks too, but I don't want to discuss the man from Nantucket right now.

one open, relaxed mind

1. THAT SMOKE
2. Have you noticed a man with his pots and his pans
3. A tryin' to cook on the ground
4. And it ain't any joke the way that the smoke
5. Will foller that feller around.
6. If the man crouches down it goes close to the ground
7. And he can't see the stuff in his pan
8. If he raises up high it goes right in his eye
9. And mighty near blinds the pore man.
10. He gits his pot hook fer to take a good look
11. At the biscuits he's tryin' to bake.
12. But right then he can't see where the lid ort to be
13. And he dassen't to make a mistake.
14. Yes down through the years comes the memory of tears
15. And of grub that was scorched or half raw
16. How the camp fire smoked and you blinded and choked
17. Just to git a few bites in your craw.
