I got this recipe from a cookbook titled The Ultimate Brownie Book. I added the chocolate chips but you could leave them out, they are still good without them. These are very thick and fudgy, the first time I made them my grandmother asked me if they were brownies or fudge. To check for doneness I always tilt the pan sideways and if the batter doesn't move then I know they are done.
Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 lb butter (no substitutions)
5 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped
2 cups packed dark brown sugar
3 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees, grease and flour a 13x9 inch baking pan.
2. In a medium bowl whisk together flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
3. Melt together chocolate and butter either in a double boiler or microwave. Allow to cool for 10 minutes.
4. Beat the brown sugar into the chocolate mixture for about 3 minutes or until smooth and silky. Beat in the eggs and vanilla just until incorporated.
5. Stir in by hand the flour mixture and chocolate chips, do not overmix.
6. Pour into prepared pan and bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.
