This is a recipe from across the pond..as in Merrie Olde England..therefore the sultanas referred to are light red or dark red grapes, seedless...so we have to use that type of grape as long as it is sweet. Whipped heavy cream with a tad of brandy takes it 'another notch'. Read more . Emeril is my idol or couldn't you tell.Bamm!
Ingredients:
brown bread (12 slices)
brown sugar
raisins
sultanas
butter
4 eggs
a pint and a half of whole milk.
Directions:
1. Take your 12 slices of bread
2. Butter your bread on both sides.
3. Stack the buttered bread up.One piece on top of the other.
4. Slice the bread carefully using a sharp knife.
5. Make a single layer of bread on the bottom of your pan
6. On top of each layer put a handfull of raisins and a handfull of grapes.
7. Take one tablespoon of brown sugar and crumble over the top.
8. Put the milk into a bowl.
9. Add the eggs and mix.
10. Pour the milk and egg mixture over the first layer to saturate - you do not want the milk level higher than the raisins and grapes.
11. Repeat...
12. For the last layer, do not add sultanas or raisins - only the brown sugar again.
13. Add milk liberally and press down slightly.
14. Put into the oven at 320 deg F for approximately 25 minutes.
15. Serve with either custard or cream (or on its own).
16. Brandy mixed into the cream gives it a fantastic taste.
