Beef & Beer Stew

From the Fifty From The Trail , The best Cowboy Cooking From A Timeless Land cookbook. Good in the kitchen or over a campfire. I serve it with a crusty bread.
Ingredients:
1/3 cup salt pork or 1/3 cup bacon, finely chopped
3 lbs beef stew meat
3 large onions, sliced
3 tablespoons paprika
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon dried marjoram
2 (12 ounce) cans beer
1 cup water
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
4 large potatoes, cubed
6 carrots, thickly sliced
Directions:
1. Render salt pork or bacon in a large stew-pot.
2. Add meat.
3. Cook over medium high until browned.
4. Remove meat.
5. Reduce heat to medium.
6. Add onions and cook until tender.
7. Return meat to pot.
8. Add seasonings, beer, water, tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce. Stir and cover.
9. Simmer until beef is tender, about 1 Â1/2 hours.
10. Add vegetables, cover and simmer until done, about 45 minutes.
