My husband got this recipe years ago from a person living in Greece as a trade for a gmail invitation, back when gmail first started. I have a fear of filo and try to avoid it but Cam has made this and it is very good. *****I'm not sure what a no. 4 package of filo is... Cam seems to remember using a 1 lb package of filo and dividing it into two.
Ingredients:
2 cups water
2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
2 no. 4 pkgs phyllo dough
2 cups butter, melted
3 cups chopped walnuts
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon sugar
Directions:
1. Syrup: Prepare syrup by dissolving sugar in water in a saucepan.
2. Bring to a boil.
3. Reduce heat.
4. Simmer for 10 minutes.
5. Add lemon juice.
6. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
7. Assembly: Line a baking tray with 2 sheets of filo dough.
8. Brush the top with melted butter.
9. Line two more sheets and brush with butter.
10. Continue in this manner until the first package of filo is done.
11. Mix chopped nuts with cinnamon and sugar in a bowl.
12. Spread walnut mixture on filo dough.
13. Repeat the dough and butter procedure with the second package of filo, except the last five sheets.
14. For the last five sheets, butter each separately.
15. Finish by brushing all the remaining butter on top.
16. Cut into diamond shapes or squares.
17. Bake in 350 F oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
18. Cool for 10 minutes.
19. Pour syrup onto baklava.
20. Serve at room temperature.
