This recipe was given to me by my Sister and is a family favorite. My family loves the top-crust so I always double it. If you pat it down 'very hard' with your hands, once refrigerated it becomes very hard and delicious just like a sugar cookie. : ) I recently made this to take to Thanksgiving dinner and wasn't able take a photo of the inside. So, the photo only shows the delicious top crust. : )
Ingredients:
6 -8 medium tart apples (i use golden delicious)
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup sugar
2/3 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
5 tablespoons butter
Directions:
1. Pare apples, slice very thin and place in shallow 9 x 13 baking dish.
2. Mix water and lemon juice and pour over apples.
3. Combine cinnamon, nutmeg and 1/2 cup of sugar and sprinkle over apples.
4. Blend remaining 1/2 sugar with flour, salt and butter until crumbly.
5. Sprinkle over apples, making sure corners are covered, and pat down (hard) with your hands so it adheres to apples.
6. Bake for 50 minutes 350 degrees till apples are tender and crust is browned .
7. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
8. May be served cold.
