I found this recipe on an old newspaper clipping, pressed into one of my grandmother's cookbooks. I haven't ventured to make this recipe myself yet, but I figured it was worth transcribing before it disintegrated! One thing I noticed - Most apple bread recipes I've seen have extra sugar added, but this one doesn't. Some apples are definitely sweeter than others though.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs, well-beaten
1 cup apple, diced very fine
1/4 cup sour milk
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup nuts
Directions:
1. Sift together flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda.
2. Mix with shortening, eggs, apples and sour milk.
3. Add vanilla and nuts.
4. Bake in loaf pan 1 hour at 350°F.
