24 Hour Layered Green Salad

Great make ahead salad for family dinner or company. This is the basic recipe I was given 35 years ago. You can change it by adding or omitting ingredients to suit your tastes. It's delicious like this, but I've added sliced olives and omitted the water chestnuts and it's delicious this way, too. Read more . I wouldn't recommend omitting the bacon, eggs, or tomatoes.
Ingredients:
1 lb. iceberg lettuce
1/2 c. green onions
1 8 oz. can water chestnuts
1 10 oz pkg frozen peas
2 c. mayonnaise
2 tsp. sugar
1/2 c. grated parmesan cheese
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 to 3/4 lb. bacon
3 hard boiled eggs

Directions:
1. Shred lettuce and put in 4 quart shallow serving dish.
2. Top with green onions and water chestnuts.
3. Break apart frozen peas.
4. Spread mayonnaise evenly over the top.
5. Sprinkle sugar, Parmesan cheese, salt, and garlic powder.
6. Cover and chill 24 hours.
7. Just before serving, sprinkle with bacon and egg.
8. Place tomato wedges around salad.
